Getting Free In-Home COVID-19 Test Kits Now

December, 2022. Just a couple of notes about getting free at-home COVID-19 test kits right now, at the end of 2022. The feds have renewed the free test distribution program through the USPS. Residential households can once again order one set of four free at-home tests here for as long as the program lasts:

Beyond that special program, you can always get free test kits if you're on Medicare because Medicare covers the cost of the kits under Medicare Part B. This is true regardless of whether you're on original Medicare or on a Medicare Advantage plan. If you're on a edicare Advantage plan you need to have your Medicare Beneficiary Indicator (MBI, aka, Medicare number) with you to give to the pharmacist. That's the number on your red, white and blue government-issued Medicare card. Your Medicare Advantage plan member ID card won't work for this. Another note: not all pharmacies have the spare kits to hand out under the Medicare provision. My Publix pharmacy did not; I had to go to Walgreens to get the free kits under Medicare.

Finally a word about test kit expiration dates. You may be thinking, I have a bunch of kits I never used so I'm all set. Not so if the kits have expired. For more about expiration dates and the extensions associated with them, click here.
