Between July and September of each year, independent agents like me are busy re-certifying with the insurance carriers they represent and participating in training events that introduce the plan benefits for the next plan year. CMS guidelines prohibit our sharing any plan details until October 1st. Now that October 1st has arrived, here are some significant changes that will affect Medicare beneficiaries in Broward and Palm Beach Counties, Florida, the general area where I am located.

Important Note: If you are losing your plan or carrier in 2027

In any case where you are losing your plan because the plan or the carrier won't be available in 2027, you will be getting a termination/service area reduction (SAR) notice in the mail. Do not lose that letter! It gives you a guaranteed issue right to a Medicare supplement paving the way for you to return to original Medicare. If that's an option you've never considered before, now is the time to consider it. More about that here: You May Have a Guaranteed Issue Right to a Medicare Supplement for 2027! Otherwise, we can help you find another Medicare Advantage plan in which to enroll for 2027.

Major Changes Affecting Medicare Beneficiaries in Broward & Palm Beach Counties, Florida
  • In the past couple of years, Aetna terminated their PPO plans in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. For 2027, they are continuing that theme with the termination of all Medicare PPO and HMO-POS plans in the tri-county area (Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and some counties north of Palm Beach as well). If you enrolled in any of those Aetna plans for 2026 you will be getting a termination/service area reduction (SAR) notice in the mail. Do not lose that letter; it's important. See important note below to find out why.

  • UnitedHealthcare is terminating their popular Chronic Special Needs (CSNP) plan MedicareMax Complete Care FL-30. If you enrolled in this plan for 2026, you will be getting a termination/service area reduction (SAR) notice in the mail. Do not lose that letter; it's important.  See important note below to find out why.

  • HealthSpring (last year's rebranding of Cigna Medicare Advantage plans) is terminating their Medicare Advantage plans in Broward and Palm Beach counties. If you enrolled in a HealthSpring plan for 2026, you will be getting a termination/service area reduction (SAR) notice in the mail. Do not lose that letter; it's important.  See important note below to find out why.

  • The Wellcare ValueScript standalone PDP, popular because of its $0 monthly premium, will increase to a modest $5.30 per month premium for 2027. The benefits of the plan have changed, but it remains a low-premium plan.

  • Regarding standalone PDPs, expect monthly premium increases from virtually all carriers. Maximum allowable deductible is $700 but can be less depending on the PDP. Maximum annual out-of-pocket is $2,400 on all 2027 standalone PDPs.

Medical Supplements (MediGap) Plans are Becoming More Popular

With all the upheaval and constant annual changes in Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplement (MediGap) plans are becoming more popular. Don't forget to ask about high-deductible plans F and G (HDF and HDG). They are more affordable than you think and could be a good fit for your needs. For more about HDG, see my article: All About the High-Deductible Plan G Medicare Supplement
